I suggest you ...

redirect social media signups to the profile page when they log in the first time

Doing this will encourage users to fill out our custom user fields.

This would be excellent. Currently, that is a huge downside to allowing for social media sign-up. We use a custom field to get the name of the Company for each user that signs up. It's set to a required field, but right now, if they log in with social media, that field remains blank.

Awkwardly, it instead waits until they decide to visit their profile page, at which point only THEN will it insist that they update the custom field before saving any changes. This ends up being an annoyance to users, because they likely went to that profile page to update something else, such as an avatar, name, email, or otherwise, and the page is instead insisting that they update another field just so that they can save their change to the first field.
