I suggest you ...

Allow alternate ways to complete a course based on completing different units

For example, either complete units 1-5 OR complete unit 6.
Two examples: (1) a Podcast course broken down into 5 short audio clips. However, for folks traveling that might want to listen to it without launching each clip, offer a 6th unit that plays the whole thing all the way through.
(2) Offer a pre-test that allows someone to test out of a group of units. Something like "either pass the pretest (unit 1) and complete units 8-10, OR if you fail the pre-test, get credit for the course based on units 2-10.

+3, and I would extend this to course pre-requisites too. I.e. "201" requires passing courses "101" or "102". This is exactly what my team is looking for, we had to create a separate course for an "equivalency test" that allows people to test out of a course (call it 101), and we had to manually enroll those folks in 201, because there was no OR logic.
